A Conversation With Oscar Cornelio-Flores, MD
Role at Avance: Physician at Avance Care Durham
Years at Avance Care: 1
My first job: Printing assistant at a family business.
Why primary care: It gives me the opportunity to know my patients from a different perspective, not only their “problems” but especially where they come from and where we can go together to improve their well-being. There are so many interventions we can do at the primary care level to avoid costly and unnecessary consequences of chronic medical conditions.
Why I love Avance Care: We are a big family here! We enjoy working together and support each other in any way we can, we have fun even in our busiest days, so our patients get the best service we can provide.
If I wasn’t a primary care provider, I would be: A motivational speaker.
My favorite part of medicine is: Interacting with and learning from my patients, celebrating their milestones in health, and supporting them when needed.
If someone wanted to start a conversation with me, they should ask me: “Do you know any good place to have ceviche?”
How I connect to patients: Give all my attention, look at the eyes, and avoid interrupting their stories. I see and treat them like they were my own family.
The one piece of medical advice I tell my patients but have a difficult time incorporating into my own life: “Please do not use electronics before bedtime.”
If I have a three day weekend, I can be found: Swimming and running in a nearby beach, then biking; or camping in our beautiful NC Mountains
The four people I would invite to my ultimate dinner party: No doubt, my wife and our 3 daughters. We have fun together!
